How freight density is calculated

Calculate the cube of each handling unit by multiplying length × width × height in inches, then divide by 1,728 to convert cubic inches to cubic feet. Divide total pounds by total cubic feet to get density in pounds per cubic foot (pcf).

  • Measure the greatest straight-line dimensions.
  • Use packaged, as-tendered dimensions—not product-only dimensions.
  • For mixed freight, calculate each item separately when possible.

Why freight class can change

Density is important, but it is not the only transportation characteristic in NMFC. Items with unusual handling, poor stowability, fragility, hazmat limitations, or elevated liability may have an item-specific class. Confirm the NMFC item number and carrier tariff before quoting or tendering.

What is a good freight density?

Higher density generally maps to a lower class and lower LTL cost. On the full-density scale, 50 pcf or more maps to class 50, while lower-density freight maps to higher classes.

Does a pallet count in freight dimensions?

Yes. Measure the full handling unit as tendered, including the pallet, protective packaging, and any projection or overhang.

Is this the final class on my bill of lading?

No. This calculator estimates the full-density class. The final class depends on the actual NMFC item, packaging, and applicable carrier rules.
